Adidas is one of the world’s largest sporting goods manufacturers in the world, with global sales in the billions of dollars, and a brand that is almost universally accepted. But this is not always the case.
Adolf Dassler started to produce sports shoes in the laundry room of his mother in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, after returning from the First World War he joined in 1924, his brother Rudolf Dassler. Together, they ran what became known as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory, with some success, but not without difficulties. In those days, electricity was very trial and error, sometimes leaving the brothers to do but pedal the bike to run their equipment.
The turning point for the young company came in 1936 at the Olympics. Adolf drove from Bavaria to Berlin, one of the first Freeways world. In the Olympic village, and dragged the suitcase with thorns, he persuaded the U.S. sprinter Jesse Owens to use them. This was the first time anyone has sponsored African-American. Owens, of course, covered board and won four gold medals. This success has made him world famous, and brought the attention of Dassler shoes athletes. Interested in their shoes snowball and orders flooded in. Before the Second World War, they sold 200,000 pairs of shoes a year.
Tensions between the brothers smoldered years, until eventually grow into a major fall. They go separate ways in 1947. Rudolph formed a company called Ruda (from Rudolf Dassler), which later became the brand name “Puma” and is still around today. Adolf took his nickname “Adi” Dassler and his twin was Adidas.
Today announced a massive global concern that rivals the number one brand of Nike sports shoe market. 3 band logo became famous, and forays into new markets, have become commonplace. Football, tennis, rugby, athletics can all boast significant sponsors.
